As of 11 January 2021, updated regulations regarding the quarantine, testing or proof of immunity requirement for travelers entering Germany from a region classified as a risk area by the Robert-Koch-Institute have been in place.
To the risk area overview (Robert-Koch-Institute)
Entry from a risk area
Travelers entering Germany from foreign Corona risk areas will be required to provide evidence of
• a negative Covid-19 test or
• documentation of a fully completed vaccination or
• a medical certificate stating that the person has previously been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus at least 21 days and not more than six months ago (proof of immunity)
The test obligation upon entry must be fulfilled within 48 hours prior to the time of entry or by testing immediately after entry.
All travelers entering Germany are required to complete the Digital Entry Application (DEA) or a substitute application prior to departure.
To the Digital Registration on Entry
Quarantine obligation
In addition, a ten-day mandatory quarantine continues to apply to travelers entering or returning to Germany from foreign Corona risk areas. It is possible to be tested for Covid-19 five days after entry for a fee and to end the quarantine prematurely. This also applies if a negative test was already presented upon entry (Two-test strategy).
Exemption from the quarantine obligation
Certain groups of people (e.g. business travelers with a stay of up to five days) may be exempt from the mandatory quarantine under certain conditions, with a negative test result.
Further information on exceptions to the quarantine
Transit passengers
People who are only in transit through the Federal Republic of Germany are exempt from the quarantine and testing obligation – provided they are continuing their journey to another country directly and as quickly as possible, without (overnight) stay in Germany. In this case, there is also no need to complete the Digital Registration on Entry (DEA).
Learn more about entry into Germany
Please note: The regulations of the respective German federal state (Bundesland) in which the traveler resides, or is staying, are applicable. Further special regulations may apply to certain occupational groups and circumstances. Every traveler should therefore carefully check before entering the country if there are any exceptions to the quarantine obligation.
